Pink Floyd - Ummagumma

Très attendu à sa sortie, cet album arrive à point comme pour faire un bilan de quatre années de galères et d'incertitudes.Le Floyd commence vraiment à être connu et reconnu et il devenait vraiment nécessaire de présenter ce que ce groupe pouvait offrir sur scène.

L'album Live enregistré à Birmingham présente les classiques du groupe très différents des originaux aussi bien dans la durée que dans l'interprétation sans failles. Le groupe est très soudé et prends un plaisir évident à jouer ensemble. Chaque pièce est longuement développée et laisse l'auditeur dans un état d'extase profonde. L'auditeur est propulsé dans son propre voyage intérieur explorant toutes les facettes de ses émotions au point de faire complètement oublier qui est derrière les instruments. Le Floyd est totalement au service d'une musique initiatique se plaçant en retrait aussi bien sur scène que dans la vie privée. Cette attitude sera longtemps reprochée au Floyd accusé de froideur et de mépris pour son public. C'est alors ignorer quand vérité toute leur énergie est tournée au service de la musique est du plaisir des sons plutôt qu'à cultiver une image "show-bizz" plus facile à manipuler par les média plus soucieux du contenant que du contenu...

"Careful With That Axe" est tout simplement magistral par sa tension croissante avec le hurlement terrifiant de Waters en apothéose libérant une énergie intérieur libératrice. L'auditeur n'est définitivement plus cantonné à son habituel rôle passif de consommateur de sons mais participe pleinement à l'élaboration du drame musical en train de se dérouler sous ses...oreilles. "Set the Controls for the Heart" explore sur une rythmique très orientale les mystères de l'espace insondable dans un climat inquiétant de fin du monde.

L'album studio est plus inégale -voir expérimental- et reflète les recherches personnelles de chacun des membres du groupe. Plutôt anecdotique, cette façon de présenter séparément des compositions très Floydiennes a le mérite de nous révéler avec précision l'apport de chacun au groupe. Waters est résolument tourné vers l'écriture des textes et des musiques assez "pop"; Gilmour confirme sa dimension "spatiale" et mélodique ; Wright apporte, avec une classe très "British", les atmosphères pesantes, dramatiques d'une rigueur extrême; et pour finir le très discret Masson dévoile une sensibilité prononcée pour les climats et la recherche de sons originaux. Batteur discret et peu démonstratif Masson est pourtant le "pilier" du groupe par son jeu de batterie reconnaissable entre tous.
